Nigeria currently has over 7, 000 students studying at over 733
institutions in all 50 states of the United States and the District of
Columbia, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission, Melissa G. Ford, has said.
Ford, who dropped this hint in Abuja on Wednesday while
declaring open the 13th Annual College and Career Fair of the U.S. Mission
Education, said institutes of higher learning in United States remain popular
for Nigerian students.
“In fact, according the Institute of International
Education, Nigeria sends more students to the United States than any other
country in sub-Saharan Africa”, she noted.
According to her, the US annual college and career fairs
have directly contributed to the increase in number of excellent Nigerian
applicants to U.S. institutions, as well as increased financial aid and
scholarships for Nigerians students, adding that the most popular state in the
United States for Nigerians is Texas.
She hinted that about 72 Nigerian students participating
in their Educational Advising Centre programme received over $2 million in
financial aid and scholarships from various institutions in the United States,
describing it as an impressive feat.
