Pork kills 5, hospitalises 20 in Enugu


Tragedy has struck the suburb of Amaegbu village Ede Oballa in Nsukka local government area of Enugu state as no fewer than five persons died, and over 20 persons hospitalised after eating pork in a burial ceremony. it wasgathered that Emeka Akwaeke and Uche Eze allegedly cooked a dead and diseased pig for the burial ceremony of their father, Akwaeke, on October 18, 2012, which they served to the people that attended the burial.
However, trouble started the following morning when all those that ate the pork fell sick. At least 20 persons were said to have been rushed to hospital, while 5 died before noon in their various homes.
Confirming the report when contacted on telephone, the state police public relations officer, DSP Ebere Amaraizu, told our correspondent that the command had commenced investigations to unearth the actual cause of the incident.
He said only two persons had been reported dead, while several others hospitalised in several hospitals in Nsukka.
“The sick ones were rushed to various hospitals for treatment. Amongst those confirmed dead are one Fidelia Ugwuobi and another whose name is yet to be ascertained,” said the PPRO.
