THE
Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed its readiness to fully assume
ownership of the Labour Party (LP) ahead of the 2015 general elections in the
country, lamenting that the political hypocrites masquerading as progressive
politicians could no longer guarantee workers’ rights and protection.
Already,
the union, citing the example of Labour Party in Britain, has sent out its
technocrats across the 36 states to scout for seasoned politicians who would be
labour-friendly and willing to churn out the true benefits of democracy to
Nigerians.
Besides,
talks are ongoing among NLC leaders on one side, and leaders of unions under
the congress, such as the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and Nigerian Bar
Association (NBA) to sensitise their members ahead of the “full take over
plan.”
Speaking
during the commissioning of a building project acquired by the Amalgamated
Union of Public Corporation, Civil Service, Technical and Recreational
Employees (AUPCTRE) Wednesday in Ilorin, the National Vice Chairman of the NLC and
the National President of AUPCTRE, Comrade Emmanuel Ajoku, said the LP was the
party in position to produce quality leadership needed in the nation.
Ajoku,
who appealed to Nigerians to be involved in the mission to form a formidable
LP, explained that the party was not only for salary earners but all cadres of
Nigerian population. He described the Ondo State LP-controlled government as a
pilot project for a bigger party structure in the offing.
The
AUPCTRE boss, who lamented growing rate of unemployment in the country, added
that new young workers were not being engaged to replace the retired members of
the union to reduce unemployment and ensure proper transfer of skills from
senior workers to younger ones.
The
union also condemned the poor state of infrastructure in several parts of the
country, urging government to intensify effort to rehabilitate most of the
roads, improve electricity supply and revive the rail system.
Ajoku
who called on government to act decisively in its fight against corruption said
to be prevalent among political leaders in the country, noted that the nation
would never grow until the menace of corruption was tackled.
