•Says Jonathan has
demonstrated commitment to fight corruption
Twenty-thirteen
will be a year of consolidation on the achievements recorded in critical
sectors like power, agriculture, aviation, transport, integrity of election,
among others, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, has
said. He also said the Federal Government has demonstrated enough commitment to
fighting corruption.
Abati, who
appeared on a magazine programme on Channels TV, Sunrise, on Saturday said, the
Federal Government has also made changes in some institutions to bring about
accountability and credibility in critical sectors. He said corruption in
agriculture, petroleum, pension management have been exposed through the
e-wallet in the distribution of fertilisers and seeds, the uncovering of
pension fraud and prosecution of those indicted.
He also mentioned
the setting up of task forces in the petroleum sector, among others. The
presidential spokesman said the setting up of task forces on Petroleum revenue,
refineries, governance, PIB to carry out audit was to ensure that where people
are found to be culpable they will be dealt with . He also said people have
been arrested and their prosecution is in progress . On when public officials
in the petroleum sector would be dealt with, especially over the N1.4 trillion
that shouldn’t have been spent on oil subsidy, Abati urged Nigerians to note
that Nigeria was dealing with a peculiar problem where this government is
fighting corruption and corruption is fighting back.
He said
government was doing all to ensure that people do not get away with impunity.
ng: “If people are getting away with impunity, then there will be chaos.” On
ministers indicted over corruption, Abati advised Nigerians with overwhelming
evidence to take their allegations to court. He described the allegations
against some ministers as “trial by media” and the President will not act based
on that.
He assured that
the President has no business covering up anybody found to be corrupt, adding
that where allegations are proved he would not stand in the way of conviction.
On expectation for 2013, he said, “what this government has achieved in power,
agriculture, aviation, transport, roads, integrity of election, it will build
on them. 2013 will be a year of consolidation. “Mr. President is only pleading
for support from Nigerians and for them to be aware of forces whose job is to
malign the government and rubbish achievements recorded. He is only urging them
to separate facts from falsehood.”
