THE
Federal Government, on Thursday, warned universities in the country not to turn
the award of honorary degrees or fellows to chieftaincy affairs.
The
government also blamed the rot and deterioration in university system in
Nigeria to poor governance.
Minister
of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i, speaking in Abuja during the
inauguration of the governing councils of four universities in Nigeria,
stressed that the sanctity and integrity of the institutions should be foremost
in deciding who should be conferred with awards.
At the
ceremony, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, has Professor Anya
O. Anya as chairman; University of Benin, Benin City, has Senator Bob Dickson
Effiong as chairman; Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife has Professor Rowland
Ndoma Egba as hairman; while University of Lagos, Akoka-Lagos, has Professor
Jerry Gana as chairman.
Rufa’i
lamented that the collapse in infrastructure, decline in academic standards and
poor management of funds and human resources, among others, had impacted
negatively on the development of tertiary education in Nigeria.
“I
charge you, therefore, to work hard so that during your tenure, the
transformation agenda of this administration under President Goodluck Jonathan
will not only be given attention but would be tangible in these institutions,”
she said.
The
minister challenged the governing councils across the country to bring to bear
their wealth of experience, as well as come up with innovative ways to revamp
university education in the country.
