•Two Policemen Killed
The security situation in Delta State worsened yesterday as the
National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, South/South, Dr.
Steve Oru, was shot by some gunmen in the state.
Similarly, a member of the House of Representatives, who
represents Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency of Delta State, Mr. Ndudi
Elumelu, was shot in another encounter with some hoodlums in the state. Oru,
who was said to be fatally injured in the deadly encounter, was on danger list
at Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Oghara, last night.
Medical practitioners were battling to save his life at press
time last night. However, Sunday Mirror learnt that his police orderly was
unlucky as he was shot dead by the rampaging gunmen, who also escaped with his
service rifle.
Also yesterday, Elumelu was shot by unknown gunmen at Eku,
Ethiope Local Government Area of the state.
Although details of Elumelu’s encounter with the gunmen were
sketchy yesterday, it was gathered that the federal lawmaker, who is the
Chairman of the House Commitee on Health, escaped unhurt.
It was not clear if the policeman, who was killed in Eku
yesterday was attached to the lawmaker, who headed the disbanded controversial
power probe committee of the lower chamber of the National Assembly. Sunday
Mirror gathered that Oru, who was also a former National Deputy Secretary of
the ruling party, encountered the gunmen along the East/West Road at Agbarho in
Ughelli North Local Government area of the state. Oru hails from the community.
The destination of Oru was not clear at the press time
yesterday. But findings by Sunday Mirror showed that Oru and his dying police
orderly were abandoned at the scene of the dastardly act as the gunmen fled the
area.
Sunday Mirror recalls that just two weeks ago, a former Federal Commissioner,
Maj.-Gen. Osio Obada (rtd.) also escaped death in Agbarho, when he was attacked
by some unknown gunmen. Although Obada escaped unhurt, his driver was unlucky
as he was shot by the bandits.
