PATRICIA ETTEH, EX-SPEAKER, GOES TO SCHOOL TO READ LAW

Five years after serving as the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Patricia Etteh, has returned to school to study law, Premium Times reports.
According to the online medium, Etteh is currently enrolled at the prestigious University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom and she is expected to emerge with a Bachelor of Law degree in 2014. She was said to have begun the university’s two-year undergraduate law programme in September 2012.

The online medium also quoted the former ‘Madam Speaker’ as saying that her return to school was part of her private life and declined to share what motivated her to return to school.
Ettehhad barely spent four months as the then fourth mostpowerful individual in the country when she was forced to step down from her leadership position of the House following aheated scandal over the renovation of her official residence in October 2007, in which some of her colleagues accused her of alleged involvement in corrupt practice.
According to Hon David Idoko-led report, the speaker signed off on a contract that would lead to the spending of N628million for the renovation of her official home and that of her deputy as well as the purchase of 12 official vehicles, a figure considered highly inflated at the time.
The lawmakers, spearheaded  by the Farouk Lawan-ledIntegrity Group, insisted that the award of the contract did not follow due process.Lawan is himself currently remanded in prison custody, facing trial for alleged bribe taking during his committee’s probe of the fuel subsidy regime.
