THE All
Progressives Congress (APC) has unveiled its logo, motto and slogan with the
broom symbol of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) becoming a central feature
of the new grand coalition of opposition parties.
Amidst
reports of ACN domination of the new party, the APC merger committee declared
that the new logo was selected because it was the most suitable and appropriate
at this point in time.
Unveiling
the logo on Tuesday night, the chairman of the Joint Merger Committee, Chief
Tom Ikimi accompanied by nine out of eleven governors of the APC declared
the occasion as “another milestone in the opposition`s drive towards 2015.”
The
adopted logo is the green-white-blue background with a broom on the white
background with a red base. The party also adopted “Justice, Peace and Unity”
as its motto, and settled for “Change” as its slogan.
Nigerian
Tribune was told that the merger partners agreed to select the broom logo after
other symbols of pen and maize of the two other merging partners were
considered unsuitable in terms of recognition and appropriateness.
It was
learnt that some committee members had raised issues on the broom logo which
they considered may be construed as a sign of ACN domination of the new party.
The members however agreed to adopt the logo as there was no other option.
Other
committees also submitted their reports with indications that the report will
soon be sent to the executive committees of the merging parties.
National
Publicity Secretary of ACN, Lai Mohammed, described the meeting as fruitful,
affirming that the party is ready to effect change at the federal level come
2015.
Meanwhile,
merger partners have denied insinuation that the adoption of broom was a sign
that the ACN is dominating the new party.
According
to the National Publicity Secretary of the Congress for Progressive Change, Mr
Rotimi Fashakin, the adoption was a sign that the new party is ready for
concession in the bid to ensure change of government in Nigeria come 2015.
“ACN is
not dominating the new party. We all agree to the logo because it is the most
suitable. We make concessions. Nigerians want us to make concessions and that
is what we are doing.
The ACN
too is making concessions,” he said, adding “we are working in the spirit of
give and take.
“The
negotiations were very difficult. But we have made it. This is another landmark
for us,” Fashakin declared.
