The
Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has vowed that evil and corrupt
politicians will never again govern the state, saying the people will not allow
them to ascend to positions of authority again. This was even as he assured
that his successor would be a progressive-minded person and not those who he
said were driven by selfish motives and not concerned about the welfare of the
masses.
Okorocha who was speaking during a press conference at the WODDI
centre in Owerri, to mark the Imo Freedom Day celebration and the second
anniversary of his administration, noted that May 6 represented the day that
the people of Imo regained their freedom from the bondage of evil men who had
held the masses down in poverty and misrule. According to Okorocha, the
celebration became imperative to honour the memories of the common people who
fought gallantly, with some losing their lives in the process to demand for
change and good governance in the state.
He stated further that, “at times due to the pressure and
attacks coming from our people who are sponsored to fight Okorocha, I feel like
quitting but for the love I have for my people I still continue to move on to
salvage the state from the grips of corrupt and evil men. “I didn’t come into
power so that people can praise me, or to make wealth for myself but that I
might change the life of my people.”
Also speaking in the same vein, the Deputy Governor, Eze
Madumere, who was one of those imprisoned during the elections, described the
event as a day that signified total liberty for the people of the state.
Madumere assured that the Okorocha-led administration would continue to deliver
the dividends of democracy to the people. “I was one of those that paid huge sacrifice
for this day to be, I was incarcerated and made to suffer unjustly but today we
can say that we are no more under bondage, we are truly free.”
The Chairman of Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze
Samuel Agunwa Ohiri, in his speech, noted that in the last two years, the state
had experienced great changes across the communities. The royal father
commended the governor and his team for remaining consistent with their
electoral promise of rescuing the state from misrule.
