The Islamic movement under the
leadership of Sheikh Ibraheem Zazzaky, yesterday, demanded the release of their
Hurras Commander, Haruna Abbas, who had been in detention since March 16, 2013,
in Kaduna, at the State Security Service (SSS)officers.
A statement issued by the
movement said it would challenge the detention for months without prosecution
and cogent reasons that warranted his being held.
The statement said: “We seek to
bring it to the attention of the authority of the State Security Service and
the well meaning leadership of Nigeria that our organisation, its command,
Staff and volunteers and indeed our abducted commander have nothing to do with
any act of commission or omission affecting the National Security of Nigeria,
at all.
“It is important to know that
the Hurras Command are a law abiding association of well-meaning and peaceful
citizens of Nigeria, whose duties and objectives include rendering selfless
service to humanity, orderly conduct of its members, assisting the law enforcement
agencies in any field of social controls, volunteering in regulating traffic
control, serving and giving aid to the needy and those in serious need of
emergency, protection against unwarranted attacks, amongst others.
“Up till today, none of our
commanders, staff and or volunteers has ever violated the sanctity of the
national security of Nigeria. We feel it right to say that all our activities
are conducted publicaly, in the open eyes of all security agencies in Nigeria.
Our abducted Commander Haruna Abbas Ali has never committed any security breach
against any law or against any security organ. We humbly requests the
authorities of the State Security Service to discharge their duties objectively
and avoid any unpatriotic interest apart from genuine national security
interest. We also request the unconditional release of our Commander, Haruna
Abbas Ali, and any innocent person that is unlawfully and unjustifiably
abducted and in detention in your custody.”
