Embarrassed by the arrest of one of its own for
armed robbery in Benin City, capital of Edo State, the Bayelsa State Police
Command saturday said the accused Police Inspector arrested by the
Nigerian Army has a mental case, a situation which had been brought to the
attention of the army.
The command therefore questioned the motive of
the army in making a mountain out of the issue. It would be recalled that
the 4 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Benin City arrested and paraded a Police
Inspector, Nanagha Aduomeni over his alleged involvement in an armed robbery
operation In Bomadi area of Delta State.
The officers and men of the 4th Brigade of the
NigeriN Army in Benin City had on Thursday paraded an Inspector attached to the
A Department of the Police Division,Yenagoa over alleged involvement in the
mounting of road block and dispossessing road users of cash and valuables.
Angered by the army’s action, Bayelsa Police
Commissioner, Mr. Tonye Ebitibituwa, said the purported arrest of the Police
Inspector by the military is a lie and that the refusal of the Brigade of the
Nigerian Army to respect information made available on the mental status of the
arrested police officer is a clear threat to the synergy established between
the sister forces.
The commissioner in a statement signed by the
command’s spokesman, Mr. Alex said the action of the Nigerian Army is malicious
and provocative. He insisted that “ the said inspector was never arrested by
the Military but rather he walked to their check point and told them he was an
armed robber.”
According to the statement, “The Inspector is a
psychiatric patient who was posted to Police Medical Unit by the retired
Commissioner of Police, Kingsley Omire to enable him have proper attention. He
walk to the Military check point without arms and no one was seen with him.”
The Police Command stated that though they were
informed about the purported arrest of the sick Police Inspector by his family
members, the attempts by the Police authorities to inform the Military of the
mental status of the man failed.
“A letter written and signed by the Deputy
Commissioner of Police, Bello Ahmed to the Military through Inspector Aselemi
Oyaghiri for the release of the arrested Inspector for proper Medical attention
failed.”
“Also an Investigative activities letter
addressed to the CP,Delta State and the Area Commander,Ughelli dated 1st of
July,2013 detailing ASP Ngiaga Odieari and Inspector Aselemi was also
written for his release. It is unfortunate and regrettable that Inspite of the
step taken by the command and the Correspondence between the Command and the
Military on the Mental state of the arrested Inspector, they still went ahead to
parade him as an armed robbery suspect.”
The Bayelsa Command noted that such
unprofessional conduct by the 4th Brigade of the Nigerian Army is capable of
destroying the robust synergy that has been established between the sister
forces.
“The members of the Public should disregard the
information provided by the military as there is no iota of truth in
it.”
