•Begins arrest of offenders today
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will, today, begin clampdown on motorists who park recklessly on the Third Mainland Bridge.Owners of private and commercial vehicles who pick or drop passengers or their colleagues recklessly on the Third Mainland Bridge may have to face the wrath of law as the LASTMA threatened to mobilize its personnel to the highway for the full enforcement of traffic law.
The decision followed the frequent traffic gridlock experienced by motorists on the highway, especially during peak period of the day.
The agency added that all impediments causing congestion on the highway would be looked into.
This, the traffic management authority said, would promote good usage of road network, reduce traffic congestion and restore sanity on Iyana Oworo axis and its environs.
Speaking on the development, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Babatunde Edu, said the flagrant and indiscriminate parking by motorists, especially company staff buses and private cars to either pick or drop passengers at the main exit and entrance of the Third Mainland Bridge is responsible for the endless traffic congestion on the axis.
He said: “The volume of traffic gridlock on that axis is caused by private cars and staff buses which park and pick pedestrians or their colleagues on the highway.
“We are set to clamp down on motorists who park recklessly on the highway, particularly in Iyana-Oworo axis. LASTMA will no longer tolerate reckless parking on the highway.
“The avoidable traffic usually associated with Iyana Oworo as a result of the non-chalant attitude of drivers who disengage, pick and sometimes park to wait for their friends, family or colleagues thereby making other road users go through undue hardship as a result of long hours spent in traffic.”
