AHEAD of the 2015 general election,prominent
members of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP),which fielded the
lateChief M.K.O. Abiola as its presidential candidate in the June 12
1993 presidential election, including
Chief Olu Falae, a one time presidential aspirant under the Alliance for
Democracy (AD), Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife,former governor of the old
Anambra State, on Tuesday, met in Abuja to strategise with a view to
resuscitating the party to participate fully in the elections.
A
reliable Source closed to the meeting told the Nigerian Tribune in Abuja
on Thursday that the group had already got the approval of the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to operate as a full
fledged political party in the country along with other registered
political parties in the country.
The source revealed that the
official launching and presentation of the new SDP would be performed in
Abuja on August 21 this year, while full mobilisation of members across
the 36 states of the federation and Abuja had commenced.
In a
communique signed by the interim National Secretary of the party, Dr
Abubakar Umar Gombe and made available to newsmen in Abuja on Thursday,
the party said that the meeting was held to review its manifesto to
ensure that all the current challenging the country as a nation were
adequately addressed as it prepared to take over the governance of
government at all levels come 2015.
The communique added that the
meeting also considered new approaches to governance and politics in the
country, especially in the areas of security, corruption, education,
unemployment, agriculture, industry and infrastructure development with
emphasis on power and transportation generally.
It stated that the
party would also be committed in ensuring internal democracy in its fold
which was lacking in all the existing political parties and as well to
build hope for the hopeless Nigerians.
Others at the meeting
included Honourable Oladipo Olaitan, Chief Lekan Alabi, Dr Bala Takaya,
Honourable Bartcho Lyelong ,Chief Austin Nweze, Honourable Korede
Duyile, Chief Jacob Afolayan, Honourable Saleh Usen and Alhaji Ibrahim
Alfa among others.
