Despite the retinue of stem-looking security personnel deployed to the residence of the Delta State Deputy Governor, Prof. Amos Utuama, armed robbers on Monday successfully carted away goods worth millions of naira from the residence.
The official residence is at the Government Reserved Area (GRA), Asaba, and close to Government House and Federal High Court.
The robbers, whose number is yet to be known, reportedly scaled the 16-feet wired fence of the compound, headed for the car parks, ransacked all of them, removed over nine brain boxes of the vehicles which ranged from Toyota Hilux cans, jeeps and others.
An undisclosed amount of cash hidden in some of the vehicles for safekeeping was also said to have been taken by the daring thieves.
Dazed by the development, Utuama has ordered the immediate redeployment of all security personnel drafted to his premises while his domestic staff have been sent packing.
The Deputy Governor’s Chief Detail and other senior security officers, who were on duty are currently facing orderly trial for alleged complicity.
Not satisfied, the robbers, who were obviously on rampage reportedly stormed the official premises of the civil commissioners located opposite the Governor’s Office, vandalised the Toyota Hilux belonging to Richard Mofe Damijo, Commissioner for Art and Tourism.
Safuga Newworld and Patrick Ferife, Commissioners for the Directorate of Local Government Affairs and Lands and Survey respectively were not spared by the rampaging robbers, who also broke into their vehicles and carted away valuable items ranging from cash to brain boxes after vandalising them.
Lucky Uyabeme, Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the development, saying investigation into the incident had commenced.
