Sector Commander of the FRSC in Ekiti State, Engr Rindom Kumven, who stated this in an interview with journalists during the African Road Safety Day and World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims in Ado-Ekiti said the headquarters of the corps has directed state commands to liaise with governors to determine how FRSC officials can lead their convoys.
The FRSC’s latest development, it was gathered, was informed by the recent crash involving the convoy of Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State and the bus conveying officials of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) which claimed the life of a former president of the union, Professor Festus Iyayi.
Kumven said there was no way a governor would breach the speed limit or drive dangerously if the FRSC leads his convoy.
He said the event with the theme: “Let’s have roads that are safe for all”, was organized to commemorate those who lost their lives in road crashes and to sensitize road users on the need to have the right attitude when driving.
The sector commander, who also advocated a law to ban sale of alcohol or intoxicants within the precinct of motor parks said it would help to reduce road crashes.
“I mean certain radius should be specified, may be 20 to 30 metres away from motor parks, there should not be sale of beer, drugs or anything related. If this can be done, auto crashes will be reduced. Accidents have reduced the Gross Domestic Product as it affects the most productive population of the country,” he said.
The state Commissioner for Works and Transport Sola Adebayo said the government is not comfortable with the rate of accidents in the country and stressed the need to reduce it to the barest minimum.
