The Nigeria police force has set up an intelligence institute in Ishare, Kwara State, the first in West African sub- region.
According to the Inspector General of Police, Mohammd Dahirum Abubakar, the institute was key to crime management, adding that intelligence officers had before now trained abroad.
Speaking at the “Scorecard: An evening with the Inspector General of Police” organised by the Delta State government in collaboration with the Nigeria police force in Asaba, at the weekend, Abubakar said no force could be effective without a strengthened intelligence machinery.
The Inspector General of police, while giving his scorecard, received accolades for the various reforms in the force even as he stressed the need for network with other security agencies for optimal performance in crime fighting.
He said the co-operation had started to yield results with the scaling down of kidnapping, armed robbery and other heinous crime in the country.
Abubakar said the police had risen to the challenges in criminal activities being perpetrated through Information Communication Technology (ICT), by the installation of equipment through which the police can listen to the criminal in action.
According to him, over 100,000 police men have been promoted, with over 1200 housing units provided in Lagos and Abuja, while hospitals had been built in Lagos, Zamfara and Kebbi.
The I.G expressed satisfaction with the removal of roadblocks, which he said, had reduced corruption in the force by 80 per cent, confirming that several police men have been dismissed.
Earlier the state Governor Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan condemned community leaders, who carried placards in protest against the arrest and trials of criminals from their domains.
According to him, it was wrong for any community leader to back any criminal, a situation that led to the invitation of chiefs from kokori in Ethiope East Local Government Area of the state recently by government.
Udugha commended security agencies and community vigilante groups for their contributions to war against crime in the state, adding that “that the state is now safe.”
The Governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi described the IG.P Abubakar as a true police man.
Highlights of the ceremony was the launching of a book ‘’The Police Public Safety and Internal Security’’ written by IG.P Abubakar.
