The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, on Monday said President Goodluck Jonathan had not shown the correct body language in the campaign against corruption in the country.
He faulted the President’s penchant for setting up panels and committees to probe corruption allegations, instead of referring such matters to the anti-corruption agencies.
Tambuwal, who spoke at an event organised by the Nigerian Bar Association to mark the 2013 International Anti-corruption Day in Abuja, challenged Jonathan to show the political will to fight corruption by referring such allegations to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Reacting to issues raised during the question and answer session concerning the committees set up to probe corruption allegations, including the N255m bullet-proof car scandal involving the Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah, and other related cases, Tambuwal said, “The executive constituting committees to investigate what ordinarily would have been investigated by the EFCC, ICPC and Code of Conduct Bureau is a duplication of effort.
“We (National Assembly) do our own; we have been mandated by the constitution to do it. They (anti-corruption agencies) have been established by law to do what they do.
The executive has no business in establishing its own. They (executive) should just refer the matter, if they mean business, to the EFCC. And I trust, very few of them in the EFCC, they will do a good job I tell you.
“Let the executive have the will of referring these matters, from the office of Mr. President to the EFCC and see what will happen. But when the body language is not correct, I mean.”
The Speaker equally faulted the anti-corruption agencies, particularly the EFCC, whose Chairman, Ibrahim Lamorde, was represented at the event.
