The new chief of air staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu, has reshuffled various appointments of the Airforce with a view to repositioning it and putting his own team in place.
This move has caused anxiety among top officers in the Army and Navy over fear of similar changes.
A statement issued by the NAF headquarters yesterday and signed by its spokesman, Air Commodore Yusuf Anas, noted that all the new postings and appointments which affect 116 officers are with immediate effect.
No sooner were the announcements made of the new service chiefs by President Goodluck Jonathan than anxiety and fear gripped those who had just been posted by their immediate predecessors in office late last year since, according to an inside source, they know the new military leaders would reposition the three forces with a view to having their trusted allies occupying sensitive posts.
The source said, “Those that were just assigned new responsibilities by the immediate past service chiefs would give way to those to be appointed by the new ones. It is a tradition in the military for the new service chiefs to put their trusted and loyal officers in strategic positions with a view to ensuring success of their visions.
“Every service chief has his own vision, unlike before; as you enter the headquarters, you would see their visions boldly displayed and they always have some officers that have worked with them before whom they regard as their own men, and this is why you see reshufflements of commanders and principal staff once a new service chief comes in. It is only on few occasions the status quo ante is maintained for continuity purposes. So, expect new postings across all boards since all the service chiefs are new on their seats.”
When asked why the new postings are being delayed, our source said: “This is the first time names of the service chiefs have to go to the National Assembly for confirmation before they would officially resume duty. The commander-in-chief refused to meet with them until their approval by the National Assembly. With their approval and their decorations to their new rank by the commander-in-chief today (yesterday), we are all waiting for the new postings any moment from now and anxiety grips everyone including me.”
Speaking further, our source disclosed that some officers who happened to be senior in rank to the new service chiefs had all indicated interest in voluntary retirements and they would all be replaced by the new service chiefs.
