The federal government is considering stiffer measures to improve quality by telecommunication service providers beyond fines and penalties.
One of the measures being contemplated is a ban on sale of new SIM cards by telecoms operators. The Minister of Information and Communication Technology Omobola Johnson dropped this hint yesterday at the Renaissance Capital Investment conference in Lagos.
Ghana last year applied similar drastic measure to improve quality. She indicated that the measure has become critical in order to compel greater investment in network quality by telecoms operators.
“We’re not satisfied at all with telecommunication services. The fines are just a slap on the wrist. We need to change behaviour”, she said. Commenting on the investment climate in Nigeria, Igor Vyan, the CEO Renaissance Capital said more investors are looking critically at the Nigerian market.
“I believe now people spending more time to learn all the details of businesses in Nigeria. It’s much more detailed investment analysis because the market is becoming more mature. There is much better quality investors”, he said.
