ALLEGED ARMS IMPORTATION: WHY WE CAN’T SUMMON TURKISH ENVOY –FG

The federal government has declared that it could not summon the Turkish ambassador to Nigeria over alleged arms importation to the country through a Turkish airline because the case was lacking in evidence.
Besides, the government said, summoning the ambassador would amount to diplomatic embarrassment to the affected official and his country.
This declaration was made yesterday by the spokesman of the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ogbole Amedu Ode, in an exclusive interview with our correspondent.
There were reports during the week that a Turkish Airline was involved in the shipment of arms to Nigeria.

The allegations had however been denied by the airline in a statement issued on Wednesday. It said that any shipment of arms or military equipment was done in accordance with existing rules. But reacting to the development in an interview with our correspondent, the spokesperson of the ministry said the claim of arms importation against the airline could not be substantiated. “This is a very weighty allegation. You cannot just begin to comment until you do necessary investigations.
We have an Embassy there, which is in position to tell us what is happening but we have no such reports from there. We will rely on what our Embassy will tell us. “You have your ears to the ground.
If you have incontrovertible evidence, bring to us. We cannot write the Turkish Ambassador based on hear say. There is no evidence to that story. We cannot embarrass ourselves over a matter that has no evidence,” the Foreign Affairs spokesperson stated.
Also speaking to Saturday Mirror, the spokes person of the State Security Service (SSS), Marilyn Ogar, said that she did not know anything about the case under discussion. “I don’t know anything about that,” she said.
When also contacted, the Director of Defence Information (DDI), Major General Chris Olukolade, told Saturday Mirror, that he was not disposed to commenting or discussing any issue said to be under intelligence investigation. “
