Worried by the prevailing insecurity in the country, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, the leadership of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has warned its members coming to attend this year’s workers’ day celebration at Eagle Square, Abuja not to come with bags.
The labour body also warned that vehicles should be parked at least 200 meters away from the venue.
It would be recalled that Abuja recorded first case of bomb blast in 2010 at the same Eagle Square during the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Nigerian independence. NLC Vice President, Comrade Lucy Offiong, who gave the warning in Abuja during a pre-May Day press briefing noted that the various attacks being carried out across the country by the Boko Haram sect are unconventional.
He stressed that conventional security forces need community assistance to succeed in combating the attackers. Comrade Offiong, who disclosed that the theme for this year’s Workers’ Day would be : Building Enduring Peace and Unity: Panacea for Sustainable National Development, called on Federal Government and security agencies to work round the clock to locate and rescue all the secondary school girls abducted in Chibok, Borno State.
He said this must be done in record time before any harm is done to the girls, adding that “such harm should be considered as our collective harm and a blister to our collective quest for progress and national greatness.”
