• Wants perpetrators brought to book
Chairman, House Committee on Sports, Hon Godfrey Ali Gaiya, has condemned Wednesday’s early morning fire outbreak at the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Head Office in Abuja, whilst calling for comprehensive investigations into the incident to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Speaking to Nigeria Pilot exclusively yesterday, Hon Gaiya said something was fishy about the inferno that started from the office of the Chief Accountant in the wake of inquiries into the financial activities of the NFF by the House Committee on Sports and the recent leadership crisis rocking the federation.
He questioned why an inferno should take place immediately government received notice of financial audits.
“This has to stop! Why should there be a fire incident after we (House Committee on Sports) have written NFF on a proposed audit of accounts for the period ending July 2014? A situation whereby a government agency is suddenly set ablaze when they are informed of financial enquiries is unacceptable? Whether it is an act of God or an act of man, I’m calling on security agencies to carry out thorough and proper investigation into activities that led to this ugly incident and bring its perpetrators to justice”
“How come it is the Chief Accountant’s Office that is gulped by fire? This is certainly an act of man and not as is being proposed by some as an act of God. We condemn it totally and want full investigation into the matter. We will not condone this anymore” an angry Gaiya said.
It would be recalled that after the fire incident on Wednesday, former Acting President of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, Chief Mike Okeke Umeh, said it was sabotage, linking it to the recent return to office of embattled NFF president, Aminu Maigari.
Concerning Nigeria’s female cadet team, Falconets, who on Wednesday cruised into the final of the ongoing FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada at the expense of Democratic Republic of Korea whom they trounced 6-2, Hon Gaiya said he was so elated that the team could rise past the crisis back home at the Nigeria Football Federation to berth at the finals in grand style.
“I’m so happy that our Falconets have given us something to smile about at this period. They have grown so maturely to put behind them the crisis back home and not let it affect their performance. They not only berthed the finals but they did so in grand style.
“The whole country is totally behind them with prayers and we encourage them to go all out for the trophy when they take on Germany in the final on Sunday in Montreal. They can do it and I don’t see the Germans stopping them” Gaiya enthused.
