A coalition of Igbo leaders from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has demanded the deputy governorship slot in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Lagos state, as a precondition to support the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
The Igbo leaders, canvassing support for President Jonathan’s re-election, should he decide to re-contest, also urged the federal government to protect the lives and properties of Igbo people throughout the federation, especially in the north, so as to guarantee electoral spread for President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 presidential election.
The coalition under the auspices of ‘Goodluck Gaa Niru 2015’ stated this in a communique issued after its maiden national executive meeting, weekend in Abuja.
The ‘Onyeisi Gburugburu’ of the group, Kenneth Ibe-Kalu, who led other executive members to read the communiqué, observed that President Jonathan secured the 25 per cent votes spread across the nation due to the massive presence of Igbo people outside the southeast.
The group however appealed to the federal government to ensure security for all Igbos outside the South-east in other to avoid intimidation of Igbos ahead of the 2015 elections.
According to the communique signed by 10 leaders of Igbo extractions, the group advised PDP to adopt its demand as a strategy to unseat the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in Lagos state.
The coalition also demanded the immediate sack of the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof. Attahiru Jega, over allocation of the 30,000 new polling units across the country.

The war of words between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) continued as the former has lambasted the APC for attempting to deceive Nigerians by issuing statements and sponsoring fabrications in the media to present former Governor of Borno state, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, as being in President Goodluck Jonathan’s entourage to Chad; knowing same to be completely false.
PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, in a statement on Saturday described as “repulsive and utterly despicable”, the refusal of the APC to shed its taste for lying, spreading of falsehood and attacks on individuals as means of achieving political control” in spite of several counsels by well-meaning Nigerians.
“Now that it has become incontrovertible that Senator Sheriff was not on the entourage of the President, we ask why the APC would release an issue of dishing out statements without cross-checking the facts or that of a desperate opposition party adopting the combination of lies, deceit and inciting of people as operational creed to hide its sinister agenda?”, PDP queried.
Stating that APC has again “displayed its lack of integrity and penchant for falsehood for which it has become repugnant to Nigerians”, the PDP said it was appalling that the opposition party has remained “a camp of dishonest lot whose statements cannot be trusted.”
“We invite Nigerians to note that APC’s statements are always laced with lies, unfounded allegations and fabrications. Recently, the APC issued a statement on the so-called Australian hostage negotiator, Stephen Davis only to be confronted with massive contradictions of facts with attendant controversy.
“We recall the shameful attempt to deceive Nigerians by accusing the PDP-led government of moving operatives of the DSS to terrorise the people of Osun state when in actual fact, the APC governor of Osun state also formally requested for their deployment ahead of the August 9 governorship election.
“Also the APC in June issued a statement wherein it alleged that a plane carrying Kano state Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso to attend its rally in Ekiti was denied landing permission in Akure, only for Kwankwaso’s Director of Press Affairs to announce that the governor was at another event in Kano and had no plans to travel to Ekiti state,” the ruling party stated.
