Ahead of the 2015 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) is considering effecting a major shake-up in the commission involving a massive movement of the 36 Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).
The shake-up, it was gathered, would involve a transfer of all the RECs out of their present states of deployment. The decision may be effected any moment from now, it was learnt on Friday.
An informed INEC source told the Saturday Tribune in Abuja that the change became necessary as part of efforts to have credible, free and fair elections next year.
“Under the new arrangement, the RECs will be moved but will still work in states in their own geo-political zones,” the source said.
What the new arrangement means, according to the source, is that “ RECs will now serve in states located in their zones of origin for effective operations ahead of the coming elections.”
Though when contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of the commission, Mr. Kayode Idowu, said he was not aware of the development, but one of the national commissioners in the commission confirmed the development, saying, “It is true, this is one of the steps we are taking to make the coming elections a credible one.”
