MAN HACKS NEIGHBOUR TO DEATH FOR SLEEPING WITH HIS WIFE

There was heightened tension yesterday at Abinse town, in Guma local government area of Benue state, when a middle aged man, Benjamin Fakande allegedly hacked his neighbour, one Jacob Unumbe, to death after he caught the deceased in bed with his wife.
Saturday Vanguard gathered from an eyewitness that Benjamin had been suspecting and accusing his wife of infidelity but when he confronted her on the issue, she denied and threatened to quit the marriage.
”The man had been accusing his wife of infidelity, but when the rumour became rife for several weeks, the man decided to spy on the wife until he got proof that she was actually having an affair outside her matrimonial home with the deceased.
”He was forced to confront the deceased whom he cautioned to stay away from his wife because he was destroying his marriage, or be prepared to face the consequence of his inglorious acts.

FULANI HERDSMEN SHOOT AT BENUE GOV, KILL 25

BENUE State governor, Mr Gabriel Suswam and the speaker of the state House of Assembly, Honourable Teryile Ahua, escaped death by a whisker on Tuesday, as they were caught in crossfire between mobile policemen and suspected Fulani herdsmen at Tse Kayin village, in Guma Local Government Area of the state.
The governor and his entourage, which included the speaker of the state assembly, had a stopover at Tse Keyin on his way to Gbamjimba, headquarters of Guma Local Government on sighting houses being burnt by suspected Fulani herdsmen, whose cattle were also grazing the deserted village at the time.
Hardly had the governor stopped to assess the situation than mobile policemen shot into the bush to scare away the marauders, but there was a reprisal from the suspected Fulani herdsmen, who had hid in the bush on sighting the convoy.

ZAKI IBIAM: FG TO PAY N8BN TO BENUE STATE


The federal government has agreed to pay N8billion to the Benue State government as compensation for the destruction of life and property in Zaki-Biam in 2001 by the federal troops.
Benue State governor Gabriel Suswam, who disclosed this to LEADERSHIP yesterday, said that officials of the state and the federal government had to settle out-of-court to reach the agreement. He was optimistic the amount would soon be released to the state.
 Suswam added that the state had obtained a favourable judgement from the Court of Appeal that awarded it N40 billion compensation for the destruction of Zaki-Biam, but had to resort to an out-of-court settlement following the federal government’s inability to pay.

IDOMA LAND: WHERE MEN POUND YAM FOR WIVES


Pounded yam is the staple food in most homes of Benue State. It is a delicacy eaten with relish by both city and village folks. Its preparation is however, not so cherished. Pounding the mounds of boiled yams into soft palatable white paste is a task that Idoma women especially, find difficult to do, and they turn to their macho men for help.
ams tubers are produced in large quantities in Benue state and the major ethnic groups of Tiv, Idoma and Igede love to treat their guests to pounded yam served with tasty native soups peculiar to their domains.
The Idoma people in particular, savor pounded yam served with their traditional okoho soup and like to entertain their guests with same.

WHEN MAD MAN PUNCTURED VILLAGE PEACE


The peaceful atmosphere of Naka and its environs in Benue State was punctured last Sunday by a man Iorhinja Gyado, who went berserk and killed five persons within an hour. JOHNSON BABAJIDE was at the area and brings the report.
The serene atmosphere at Tse Alaigwu, Ikyabev district, a few kilometers to Naka, the headquarters of Gwer West Local Government Area is beautiful and attractive. It is dotted with thatched houses scattered around and trees, lined up as if they were planted to add to its beauty. Its proximity to the nearby dam also adds colour to the environment.
This peaceful environment was taken over by terror, penultimate Sunday, when a 30-year old mad man, who went berserk, within three hours of insanity sent six persons, including himself, to their early graves with attendant weeping and gnashing of teeth.
