Too much emphasis on a university degree in a developing country like Nigeria signifies post-colonial mentality and a misplaced priority that the country must do away with if we are to get out of our current worrisome unemployment status, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah has observed.
The clergyman cum social commentator also stated that a good number of the universities in the West have hit gold in Nigeria because of the rising desperation for a university degree in the country.
Bishop Kukah, who lamented that a consumer country like Nigeria does not have to accord too much priority to university degrees, further observed that Nigerians should take a cue from their fellow countrymen, the Igbo, who have achieved a considerable degree of self-sufficiency as well as comfort arising from their entrepreneurial prowess and not necessarily university degrees.

KUKAH BLAMES NORTHERN ELITE FOR BOKO HARAM INSURGENCY
Warns FG against over dependence on military force
The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah, yesterday accused the Northern elite of contributing to the emergence of the Bokom Haram insurgency by neglecting the ordinary people in their immediate environment for some years now.
He also warned the federal government against over dependence on the use of military force to tackle the insurgency, saying the strategy was capable of creating a hyper sense of importance in the military class, at the detriment of democratic leaders.
The cleric spoke at a lecture marking the 43rd convocation ceremony of the University of Nigeria (UNN), Nsukka, where the former deputy senate president, Chief Ken Nnamani, was chairman of the occasion.

HOW JONATHAN GOT IT WRONG–KUKAH
Social
critic and commentator, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, has said that President
Goodluck Jonathan erred in the planned amnesty for the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunnah
Ladda’awatih wal-Jihad, also known as Boko Haram.
The bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, who spoke
exclusively with Daily Sun in Abuja, said the refusal of former President
Olusegun Obasanjo to implement the report of the Justice Chukwudifu Oputa
panel, led to what is today known as Boko Haram. He lambasted Obasanjo, saying
his government was reckless.
Kukah said that Jonathan’s involvement of the military in
resolving the crisis is endangering our democracy, declaring that it is also an
admittance of incompetence.
