The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), suspended its five-day old strike yesterday.
The suspension was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a meeting with petroleum minister, Mrs. Diezani Allison-Madueke and the management of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
The oil workers had on Monday ordered their members to embark on indefinite strike in protest against NNPC’s alleged refusal to address in-house pension issues concerning workers in the oil industry.
•As NUPENG orders tanker drivers to stop loading
Lagos residents may experience fuel scarcity from this week as the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) has instructed tanker drivers in Lagos zone to stop loading from Tuesday and Wednesday.
The union’s National Chairman, Comrades S. A. Oladiti and National Secretary, Sunday Ochibejivwie, in a statement, stated its members may embark on strike in Lagos from this week.
A nationwide fuel scarcity is imminent following allegations of sabotage against executives of National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) by the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, (IPMAN).
The National Financial Secretary of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, (IPMAN) who also doubles as the Special Adviser Media and Publicity to IPMAN’s National President, Alhaji Danladi Garba Pasali, made this known yesterday in Abuja.
According to Pasali, the President of NUPENG, Igwe Achese has ordered all Fuel Tank drivers within the umbrella of NUPENG not to lift fuel from all the Depots nationwide.
Pasali also alleged that, the NUPENG boss has shut the businesses of NIPCO, thereby sabotaging the Federal Government’s efforts at making Petroleum products available to the Nigerian masses.
The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers (NUPENG) yesterday reiterated its preparedness to begin a nationwide strike in the New Year to protest the plan by the federal government to privatise the nation's four refineries.
NUPENG President, Igwe Achese, in a statement dismissed reports that the union had suspended the strike, adding that the union will go ahead with the industrial action as planned unless government rescinds its decision on the privatisation of the refineries.
The union said it was aware of the January 7 meeting with the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, but hoped that the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Maduekwe, will attend, as the issues involved are critical to her ministry.
