WIDOW REPLACES HUSBAND AT ABIA ASSEMBLY

Widow of the former member representing Aba South constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Nwogu Iheasimuo, has been elected to replace her late husband in the House. She is Mrs. Nkemdirim Nwogu Iheasimuo.
The late Iheasimuo died last February. When INEC announced the timetable for the conduct of the bye-election for his replacement, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under which platform he won, chose his widow as his replacement. In the election described by many as a walkover for the PDP, Mrs. Iheasimuo beat her closest rival and the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Elder Smart Ebere, with a wide margin of 1, 655 votes to 313.

The candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Chimaobi Akwara, came a distant third with 252 votes. Dr. Mgborie Obasi, who announced the result, gave the breakdown as follows; total number of registered voters in the constituency is 122, 900, while 2, 772 were accredited by INEC for the election. The total valid votes were 2, 220, rejected votes 36, total votes cast were 2, 256.
The election was seen by many as a foretaste of the 2015 election in the area and the reason all the candidates jostling for political offices in the state are bent on realising it in PDP. Governor Theodore Orji, while congratulating the winner, said her emergence was victory for democracy. He also commended the security agencies, the electoral commission and the electorate for the peaceful conduct of the election.
