A soldier, Muazu Mohammed, who had once served with the military Joint Task Force (JTF) in Rivers State on Wednesday reportedly shot and killed himself in what his colleagues described as suicide following the murder of his parents and two children by Boko Haram insurgents in Yobe State.
The soldier, a corporal in the
Nigerian Army, according to sources, was attached to the Abonima Command of the
JTF in the Niger Delta region to stem the tide of organised crime there.
The deceased, a source said,
received the news of the killings of his family members on Wednesday through a
relation based in Damaturu, Yobe State capital.
Details of the incident were
still sketchy at the time of this report.
An army lieutenant (name
withheld) who volunteered the information to our correspondent, however,
described the soldier as a coward.
“He must be a coward for
killing himself. He is not a soldier and shall definitely be tried
post-humously and his corpse sentence accordingly.
“He would not get any benefit
for disgracing the military.
“His immediate commander is
aware and has made appropriate report to the military authorities and necessary
actions would be taken in the military tradition,” the source added.
