DOCTORS MAY SUSPEND STRIKE TODAY

The leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) may suspend their seven-week old strike today, following a vote decision by the leadership of the body at its Executive Delegates Meeting in Abuja, THISDAY has learnt.
According to highly-placed sources, the body, which went on strike on July 1 over a 24-point demand presented to the federal government, is poised to suspend the strike action and return to work.

Members of the NMA had met with various stakeholders and elder statesmen over the past few days, in a bid to resolve the lingering issue, and the latest decision is said to be the outcome of the final meeting of its highest decision-making organ, the EDM.
THISDAY also gathered that a press conference would be called today to announce the decision by the doctors to suspend the strike, which has severely affected medical services in the health sector, especially in the face of the impact of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), which was imported into Nigeria a few weeks ago by the late Liberian diplomat, Patrick Sawyer.
Following repeated futile attempts to get the doctors to return to work, the federal government had sacked 16,000 resident doctors nationwide; an action which drew mixed reactions among Nigerians.
