IG STARTS TERMINAL LEAVE AS FG REJECTS TENURE EXTENSION

The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, is expected to proceed on terminal leave any moment from now, having spent the mandatory number of years in service.
Abubakar, from Zamfara State, enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force on July 30, 1979 and is due for retirement on July 30, 2014, based on the mandatory retirement age.
Findings indicated that the replacement for Abubakar who became the acting IG on January 25, 2012, might be announced early next month by the government.
The Federal Government had dashed Abubakar’s hope of tenure extension and he was said to have been given the hint that he would not get an extension.
Investigations showed that it was only the tenure of IG Sunday Ehindero’s tenure that was extended by one year by the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
It is widely believed that an acting IG would be picked from the ranks of the Deputy Inspectors General of Police or Assistant Inspectors-General of Police.
The appointment of a new IG is usually done by the Nigeria Police Council which is chaired by the President.

TERRORISM: IGP SPITS FIRE, WARNS AGAINST PROVOCATIVE COMMENTS

The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, has warned politicians and those in the habit of making unguarded, inflammatory and unsubstantiated utterances to desist or be sanctioned.
The warning is contained in a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Frank Mba, on Sunday in Abuja.
Abubakar said the Force would no longer condone any provocative, divisive and inciting comments that were not clearly corroborated by facts or evidential proof.
He added that such utterances were capable of breaching public peace.
“Such statements are capable of desecrating our national symbol and identity and promoting a regime of lawlessness,’’ he said, warning that such utterances would be met with appropriate legal sanctions.

APPOINTMENT OF NEW IGP PUTS PRESIDENCY IN A FIX

As the search for the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) intensifies, the Presidency appears to be in a fix as to who will be more competent to succeed the incumbent IGP, Mohammed Abubakar, an Aso Rock source has disclosed to Sunday Independent.
This is as Abubakar (56), an indigene of Zamfara State, who joined the Nigeria Police Force on July 30, 1979, is due for retirement in July 2014, by which time he would have reached the compulsory retirement age.
He was appointed the Acting IGP in January 2012 and was confirmed as IGP in July 2012.
Section 215 (1a) of the 1999 Constitution puts the appointment of the IGP in the hand of the President, “on the advice of the Nigeria Police Council, from among the serving members of the Nigeria Police Force.”
The President is the Chairman of the Council.
Insinuations are rife that the president is looking at a candidate with a tough personal backed by experience.

SALARIES: IGP THREATENS BANKS

Inspector General of Police Mohammed Abubakar has threatened to withdraw police accounts domiciled in some commercial banks for deliberately delaying payment of monthly salaries to policemen.
The affected banks are First Bank, Skye Bank, UBA and Zenith Bank. Abubakar was said to have summoned officials of the banks to the Force Headquarters to register his displeasure.
In a statement yesterday by Force spokesman Frank Mba, the IGP described the bank’s failure to release the salaries as a conspiracy against the Force.
Abubakar said the situation has continued to expose police officers and men to undue pressure and extreme difficulties.

I-G WEDS DAUGHTER OF FORMER FCT MINISTER

Abuja – The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar, on Saturday married, Zarha, the daughter of a one-time FCT Minister, Mr Ibrahim Bunu.
The wedding “fatiha’’, which took place at the National Mosque, Abuja, was conducted by the Chief Imam of the mosque, Ustaz Musa Mohammed, who prayed for the success of the marriage.
Dignitaries at the wedding include Vice-President Namadi Sambo, two former Heads of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida and Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, the FCT Minister, Alhaji Bala Mohammed, and members of the National Assembly.

IG ORDERS ARREST OF POLICEMEN IN CAMOUFLAGE

Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Abubakar has allegedly ordered the arrest of policemen caught wearing their new camouflage all over the country.

The directive is said to be in response to a petition written against Abubakar to the Presidency concerning the sale of the camouflage.

Police source said on the condition of anonymity that violators were being arrested by the IG’s monitoring team and taken to Abuja.

The source said, “This incident began sometime last month when some concerned policemen wrote a petition to the Presidency concerning the sale of these camouflage uniforms. The camouflage, which is available at all police stores nationwide, were being sold at either N10,000 or N15,000 and then sewn for N5,000.

WOMAN PETITIONS IG…ALLEGES SHE WAS RAPED IN POLICE CUSTODY

A middle-age woman alleged to have been serially raped by four men while in police custody in Abraka, Delta State, has petitioned the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 5, Benin, accusing the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, and his men of negligence and failure to protect her.

In the petition by counsel to the woman, Mr. Ejomasuvwe Efe, alleged that following a fight between her and her neighbour, police from Abraka Police Station came to arrest her following a complaint from one Mama Afoke who she had altercation with.

IG LEADS 3000 POLICEMEN FOR JONATHAN’S VISIT TO BORNO, YOBE

More than 3,000 policemen and 100 State Security Service (SSS) operatives have been deployed in Borno State to protect President Goodluck Jonathan, who is visiting the state and neighbouring Yobe between today and tomorrow.

The two states are the epicentre of Boko Haram’s activities. Thousands have been killed in the insurgency launched by the sect, which is pushing for sharia, the strict Islamic code, among others.

The security cover for the President’s first visit since the insurgency began, will be coordinated by the Chief of Defence Staff, Vice-Admiral Ibrahim Ola Sa’ad and Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Abubakar.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, yesterday said the problem bedevilling the police  force was not junior officers, but very senior officers.

Abubakar revealed this while decorating eight newly-promoted senior police officers with their new ranks, in Abuja.

“We have found out that most of the problems of the police are not even with the junior ones. Most of the time, the problem is with the senior ones. We refuse to do what we are expected to do, in terms of leadership.

NIGERIA’S POLICE BOSS SHUFFLES COMMISSIONERS

The Inspector General of Police, Mr. MD Abubakar, has ordered the immediate redeployment of 33 Police Commissioners across its various state commands and formations in Nigeria.

Frank Mba, Force Public Relations officer said in a statement that the deployment is part of on-going efforts to reposition the law enforcement agency for greater efficiency. The new postings affected newly promoted officers as well as other senior officers swapping strategic command positions, Mba added in the statement.

“The IGP charged the newly deployed officers to adopt proactive and aggressive crime-fighting strategies and to continually initiate policies and programmes that would strengthen the essential values of policing and best practices in law enforcement which include: transparency, accountability, respect for fundamental human-rights of citizens and the promotion of strong professional ethics in accordance with the provisions of the Code of Conduct for the Force,” he added.

Following the growing wave of kidnappings and the general state of insecurity across the country, there has been an increasing demand for special police protection by top politicians and businessmen.

However, the police said they would not kowtow to demands that were unjustifiable due to the stringent procedures introduced by the present Police Management Team

National Mirror findings showed that the demand for bodyguards was prominent in Anambra, Imo and Abia states.

CODE OF CONDUCT: BOOKLETS YET TO GET TO POLICE FORMATIONS

Two weeks after the formal launch of the Code of Conduct and professional standards for police officers by the Police High Command with fanfare, most of the rank and file has not got copies of the document.

Daily Independent investigation in some police divisions and stations in some satellite towns in the FCT and part of Nasarawa State, showed that only Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) have so far received copies of the booklet.

A DPO in one of the satellite towns, who pleaded anonymity disclosed that he got a copy of the document at the venue of the launch and that since then, no copies have been given to his division for onward distribution to his officers and men.

According him, “It was at the day of the launch that I got this copy I am using. No copy has been given to us for distribution to our rank and file and nobody told us when we are going to get the copies.
